Technology and defense are the pillars of the modern Virginia economy. There is a higher percentage of technology-based
jobs in Virginia than in the workforce of any other state. Virginia is also one of the leading states for per capita defense spending, with more active-duty military personnel than any other state. The confluence of high-tech firms,
consulting companies and federal agencies has been particularly important for the creation of northern Virginia jobs. The Central Intelligence Agency and Department of Defense are headquartered in northern VA, and the Dulles Technology Corridor contains numerous
telecom, satellite and software companies.
The Virginia economy is also known for its tremendous diversity. Resource-based industries such as wine,
fishing, mining and
agriculture are significant sources of
Virginia jobs. Tourism is a major economic contributor. Nanotechnology and
biotechnology research is conducted at sites such as the Virginia BioTechnology Research Park and Janelia Farm. Many Fortune 500 companies are based in Virginia. Genworth Financial, The Brink’s Company, Circuit City and Capital One are some of the largest providers of jobs in Richmond, Virginia, the state capital. There are four military bases in the area of Virginia Beach, the state’s most populous city. As a resort city, tourism is an important industry, and the
retail sector accounts for a large portion of Virginia Beach jobs.
