Clinical practice is the field most often associated with veterinary jobs, but contemporary vets have many different career options open to them, including research, pharmacology and food safety. Trends such as pet health insurance and the increased use of “human” healthcare procedures and technology are also expected to rapidly accelerate the number of vet jobs available in companion-animal treatment. Opportunities should be excellent for veterinary equine jobs or rural large-animal practices as well. However, breaking into the industry can be surprisingly difficult; competition for veterinary education programs is very strong due to the shortage of accredited training institutions.

The educational requirements are comparatively easier for veterinary assistant jobs. A two-year associate’s degree is standard for entry-level vet techs, who can then find work in clinics, hospitals, laboratories, zoos and other institutions. Experience or related certification is typically required for animal jobs at shelters, kennels, groomers or training schools.
