Restaurant and food service jobs are a leading source of employment for part-time workers, teens, students and moonlighters (i.e. people who work two or more jobs). Most restaurant jobs are in food preparation or customer service. High turnover, lower-than-average pay, and minimal education and experience requirements are typical of the industry, with the exception of restaurant management and chef jobs. For wait staff and even some food preparation positions, eating establishments will often provide inexperienced applicants with on-the-job training. Tips provide a significant percentage of income for waiter and waitress jobs; hourly wages for these positions thus tend to be lower than for hosts/hostesses, busboys, dishwashers and other food service workers who don’t receive direct tips. Income for bartender jobs is also primarily tip-based and will vary significantly depending on the restaurant, bar or club and its popularity and clientele.
