Printing & Editing & Writing Jobs

The dismay at the plight of American literacy is misguided in at least one important way: printing jobs may be declining rapidly, but editors and writers are finding a wealth of opportunities in new media. This is especially true of writing jobs, though with the exception of technical and specialist work, compensation may be minimal or even non-existent (blogs, fledgling websites, etc. offering “exposure”). However, an experienced and persistent writer can still find enough freelance writing jobs to keep himself or herself in food and Dostoyevsky novels.

Editing jobs are somewhat harder to come by in the online sector, but editors with an educational background in a business or technical field should find the job market favorable in both Internet and traditional publishing. Many editors and copyreaders are also able to work independently by building a strong portfolio of fiction and/or non-fiction proofreading jobs.
