Healthcare
Health care is the largest industry in America and it’s only going to get bigger. By 2014, one out of every five dollars spent in the U.S. will be health related. An aging population, higher life expectancy, and medical technology advancements are expected to create record numbers of healthcare jobs in the next decade. The current shortage of qualified applicants for hospital nursing jobs is just one indicator of how healthcare employment demand could exceed the supply of trained workers (on the plus side, this has led to an increase in travel nursing jobs). The greatest employment growth is predicted to occur in home health aides and physician assistant jobs. Many of these positions require only an associate’s degree and related certification. One to two years of training and up to two years of experience is necessary to acquire RMT or CMT certification for medical transcription jobs - another field that is expected to present excellent career opportunities. Other medical careers that will see higher-than-average employment growth include physicians/doctors, medical coding and billing, pharmacy technician jobs, and medical and health services managers.
