Tourism is by far the number one source of private-sector jobs in Hawaii. The state’s industrial base has broadened in recent years, but tourism has been its economic lifeblood since Hawaii achieved statehood in 1959. The U.S. government is the other major provider of Hawaii jobs, and is responsible for about 1/5 of the state’s economic production. There are several military bases in HI, including the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard.

Honolulu is Hawaii’s capital and most populous city. The Honolulu jobs market is heavily dependent on tourism, but agriculture, aquaculture (i.e. aquatic farming), manufacturing, trade and shipping are all sizable economic contributors as well. Scientific jobs in Honolulu represent a smaller but still significant portion of its employment pool. Archaeology and oceanography are two of the state’s important research fields. The nearly universal medical coverage in The Aloha State is an often overlooked part of its appeal; it also ensures a consistent need for Hawaii nursing jobs.
