Employment prospects should be excellent over the coming decade for engineering and architecture professionals, though in both sectors, opportunities will vary by specialty. The growth in U.S. engineering jobs will be dampened somewhat by offshoring, but disciplines such as
biomedical and environmental engineering will offer a wealth of opportunities to well-qualified applicants. In the field’s largest specialty, civil engineering jobs will likely show the greatest numeric growth, thanks in part to the long-neglected need for national infrastructure improvements. Though mechanical engineering is one of the largest and broadest disciplines, the number of new mechanical engineering jobs will be minimized by the continued decline of the U.S.
manufacturing sector. Elsewhere, the rise in offshore oil drilling and its related technical and environmental challenges will intensify the value and complexity of marine engineering jobs. In the architectural industry, fallout from the
mortgage crisis may somewhat diminish opportunities in the residential sector. However, new architecture jobs in emerging fields such as sustainable
design will help to offset these cyclical economic changes.
