With 13.3 million workers employed in 2006, education is the second-largest industry in the U.S. About half of those workers are teachers. Though “underpaid and overworked” is the phrase often associated with teaching jobs, actions have been taken in recent years to make careers in education more appealing to prospective teachers. New and alternative educational institutions have also created many employment opportunities for teachers. In particular, the tremendous growth of the Internet education industry (aka distance learning) has enabled many people to use online teaching jobs as a supplementary or primary source of income. The rise in adult learners, part-time students, and vocational students has also increased the number of community college teaching jobs that are available. Likewise, the increasing demand for post-secondary training is expected to result in many new part-time and non-tenured education jobs in that field. Additional jobs in education and training that are expected to see significant employment growth include teaching assistants, special education teachers, counselors, and education administrators.
