Research Scientist63024-02Hamilton Sundstrand is among the largest global suppliers of technologically advanced
aerospace and industrial products. We design and manufacture aerospace systems for commercial, regional, corporate and
military aircraft and are a major supplier for international space programs. Our industrial products serve industries
ranging from hydrocarbon, chemical and food processing to construction and mining. The Research Scientist position is a
challenging opportunity for an experienced analytical instrumentation scientist to lead the design and development of
state-of-the-art detectors for atmospheric monitoring, including sensors for biological and chemical weapon materials in
defense, homeland security, and manned-space applications. The Research Scientist provides scientific and technical
leadership to coordinate the technical activities of engineers developing analytical instrumentation. The position will
emphasize the development and adaptation of mass spectrometers, chemical sensors, or ion mobility spectrometers to
chemical detection.Position duties include: Generate instrument concepts and develop alternative designs. Model key
analytical elements, such as ion optics, flow dynamics, vapor/surface partitioning and aerosol behavior to select and
optimize instrumental designs. Develop algorithms for signal extraction and data processing in the presence of
background and environmental interferences. Perform laboratory trade studies and prototype key instrument subsystems.
Coordinate instrument testing and debugging and identify measures to address instrument deficiencies. Review and analyze
test data and evaluate compliance with requirements. Write test reports and technical documents. Present results to
in-house and customer representatives. Along with technical responsibilities, also participate in the development of new
business areas by making presentations to potential customers and by writing successful proposals. MS or Ph.D. in
Physics, Instrumentation Engineering, Bioanalytic Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry.1. Minimum of 3 years experience
with development of analytical instrumentation, preferrably focused on magnetic sector and time of flight mass
spectrometry. Laboratory experience with mass spectrometry, gas chromatography, and optical instrumentation will also be
considered. 2. Candidate should be familiar with instrument modeling and design, material selection, sample transport,
and laboratory application testing.3. Good verbal and wrtitten communication skills are essential.4. The successful
candidate may be required to apply for and obtain a DOD secret clearance prior to the end of the probationary
period.United Technologies Corporation is An Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
