With a land area twice the size of Texas, it’s no surprise that the natural resource industry is the leading creator of jobs in Alaska. Oil and gas account for over 75% of the state’s revenues, and TAPS – the 800-mile long Trans-Alaska Pipeline System – has created many Alaska pipeline jobs and petroleum-related jobs since its completion in May of 1977. Fishing is the other major natural resource industry in AK; the unusually proactive approach of Alaska’s fishing industry to sustainable development bodes well for future employment. Due to the seasonal nature of the state’s industries, about 1 out of every 5 Alaska jobs is held by a nonresident worker. Government and government enterprises, including military bases in Fairbanks and Anchorage, account for nearly 25% of the state’s employment. Tourism and retail trade have also become important sources of stable Alaska careers. Anchorage is the largest city in the state. Shipping, tourism, petroleum and the military are the main sources of Anchorage, Alaska jobs.
