Agriculture & Forestry & Fishing Jobs

Advances in biotechnology and an increasing emphasis on conservation and land management have had a strong impact on the types of fishing, forestry and agriculture jobs that are available today. Though millions of Americans are employed in traditional ranch and farm jobs, many of the best new career opportunities are in the agribusiness sector, i.e. food production, processing, marketing and related equipment and supplies. Agricultural jobs are available in an incredibly diverse range of industries, including biofuels, horticulture, irrigation, phytomonitoring and much more. In forestry, private sector employment is centered on the forest products industry (mostly paper and packaging). The USDA Forest Service and state and local governments are also primary sources of forestry jobs. A Bachelor of Science degree is necessary for a professional forester, while a two-year degree at a technical school is required to be a forestry technician. Specialized education is not necessary for logging workers. As for commercial fishing jobs, location is an important consideration; much of the available work is in Alaska and Florida .
