Fresh Profile: Mechanical Engineering Jobs

Published on 2008-07-30

Mechanical engineering jobs deal with the design, production and improvement of a broad array of machines, systems, tools and engines. From the robots used by manufacturing companies to the space exploration vehicles that support NASA missions, mechanical engineers use the fundamentals of mathematics, energy, materials and mechanics to bring helpful machines and devices into our everyday lives.
Mechanical engineering is one of the most diverse engineering disciplines. For example, mechanical engineer jobs might involve designing and building machines for industrial and consumer use, such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems. Some mechanical engineers create refrigeration systems for the food industry or high-tech computer equipment for medical testing. Other engineers might design and operate different types of power plants, such as fossil fuel and nuclear power plants.
Mechanical engineer jobs also vary depending on the engineer's area of specialty.
Design engineers are involved with new product development and creating ways to upgrade older products. Most of their design and analysis work is done with CAD (computer-aided design) software. A design engineer can major in one of many different fields, such as robotic system design, computer coordinated mechanisms or computer-aided engineering. Testing engineers test products to ensure the safety and functionality of their quality and design. They are also responsible for choosing which tools to test with, and sometimes they must come up with new procedures for testing. Engineers who hold manufacturing engineering jobs are proficient in all aspects of production, including the design, installation and operation of a variety of manufacturing systems.
Job opportunities are available for mechanical engineers in almost every industry, though the majority of positions are concentrated within the manufacturing sector. Other high-employment sectors include agricultural production, bioengineering, computer mechanics, and thermoscience. Examples of major companies that hire mechanical engineers are Siemens, Parsons, and General Electric.

A bachelor's degree in engineering is required for most entry-level engineering jobs. Mechanical engineering jobs for graduates are generally easier to obtain if one possesses a master's degree or has obtained some related experience via an internship program. Engineers who work directly with the public, like consulting engineers or those with government jobs, must be licensed by the state.
