According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, another 500,000 teaching jobs will be created in the U.S. by the year 2016. That employment growth, combined with the large number of positions that will be vacated over the next decade through retirement, will help to make education an appealing career choice for many students and graduates. The American public's growing recognition of education and the need for better pay for teachers should also ensure that education jobs offer higher salaries than in the past.
These are just a few of the jobs in education that should offer excellent career prospects in the coming years:
High school teaching jobs
The standard requirements for most high school teaching jobs are a Bachelor's degree, relevant licensure and completion of an approved teacher training program. Licensing requirements vary by state, and many states offer alternative licensing programs which allow people who are switching careers or have not finished education programs to teach under a provisional license. Median annual earnings for high school teachers range from $43,500 to $50,000 within a general salary range of $28,500 to $76,000.
Community college teaching jobs
The number of students attending community colleges has increased dramatically over the past several years. The American Association of Community Colleges states that about 1/3 of all undergraduates are community college students â?? an increase of 20% over the previous decade. That's good news for aspiring educators. Teachers' salaries at two-year colleges are generally lower than at four-year institutions, but the emphasis on teaching (and relatively easier tenure track) can be an appealing alternative to the â??publish or perishâ?? world.
Online teaching jobs
Online teaching, aka distance learning, can provide a wealth of opportunities for both full-time and part-time teachers. Job requirements are generally comparable to those of standard teaching positions, though computer literacy is obviously of greater importance. An ability to teach popular, in-demand courses is useful. Many online teaching jobs require a Master's degree or Ph.D. Some educational institutions will advertise directly for online teachers, but we also recommend browsing our job listings to find opportunities in online education.
