Fresh Profile: Becoming an Architect

Architecture is the art and science of designing and erecting buildings and other large structures. That combination of art and science is part of what gives the occupation its appeal. Successful architects combine a natural eye for style and beauty with trained knowledge of building and operational codes; structural, temperature, electrical and other systems; CADD (Computer-Aided Design and Drafting) and BIM (Building Information Modeling) technologies; and many other skills. Architects often specialize in one aspect of their profession, such as sustainable design, project management or healthcare facilities.

Students who wish to pursue architecture jobs must usually obtain a degree from a school program that has been accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board. A 5-year bachelor's degree, or B.Arch., is the most common educational path for aspiring architects. This can be followed with a 2-year master's degree, or M.Arch. Individuals moving into architecture from another discipline can obtain a 3 or 4-year master's degree. After graduation, a multi-year internship or training program (e.g. the IDP, or Intern Development Program) must be completed before a candidate can sit for the licensing exam. During this time, graduates usually work at architectural jobs under the supervision of a licensed architect.

About 20% of all architect jobs in the U.S. are held by self-employed individuals. Median annual earnings for architects are in the high $60Ks within a range of about $40K to $100K+. Job prospects in many sectors of the profession are understandably tied to economic and construction cycles, but opportunities should remain strong for healthcare, commercial and other specialists. Region is another important factor for aspiring architects, as New York or Chicago architecture jobs will offer much stiffer competition than similar opportunities in smaller markets.
