Fresh off the Beaten Path: Music Therapy

Published on 2008-03-31

Do you enjoy performing and composing music as much as you enjoy helping people? Are your musical talents paralleled only by your keen abilities for empathy and caretaking? If so, you might take a break from your job search for a moment and consider a career in music therapy.

Music Therapy: What Exactly Is It?

According to the American Music Therapy Association, Music Therapy is "the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program."

Personality Profile: Is Music Therapy Right for Me?

Music therapy is just one of many burgeoning occupational areas requiring interdisciplinary knowledge, talents and interests. Those best suited for a career in music therapy not only possess the extensive musical knowledge, talent and passion obviously requisite in all types of music jobs, but they must also be inspired by the same kind of intense interest in helping people that is nascent in those who tend to pursue healthcare jobs.

Music therapists firmly believe that music can do more than simply entertain; they understand that music possesses the power to significantly improve the health of one's body and mind. Music therapists have naturally creative, innovative, empathetic, patient and highly motivated personalities. They also have strong interpersonal skills, and they are driven by an unflagging desire to help others and make a difference.

Education, Training and Experience: How Do I Become a Music Therapist?

Future music therapists are generally well-educated, often holding bachelor's degrees or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience in music. Therapist candidates typically enroll in approved, college-level music therapy curricula that includes coursework in music, psychology and therapy and research methodology, as well as classes and internships offering "practical" instruction in matters such as career placement, the logistics of billing and the structuring of sessions. Once candidates have completed their programs, they are eligible for the Certification Board for Music Therapists examination. With that certificate in hand, the beginning music therapist is ready to explore the vast array of industries in which their expertise is needed.

Areas of Application: Where Would I Work?

A wide variety of fields and places employ music therapists. Therapists who may also be interested in hospital jobs or educational work like music teaching jobs will find many musical therapy opportunities satisfy such medical and educational interests as well.

Some music therapists who originally considered pursuing music-related entertainment industry jobs are thrilled to find that they not only have the opportunity to compose, arrange, produce and perform as a musical therapist, but they can also enjoy a great sense of fulfillment from seeing the direct impact of their creative talents on patients.

Some of the many institutions that hire musical therapists include elementary schools, universities, psychiatric hospital units, mental health centers, nursing homes and a variety of state institutions and private practices.

The Future

As scientific research continues to substantiate its efficacy (and subsequently, cost-effectiveness) in healthcare, the field of music therapy continues to grow. In light of this research, more and more health insurance companies are offering reimbursements for music therapy. Additionally, according to the American Music Therapy Association, several state Medicaid programs provide coverage for music therapy. Those seeking jobs in Arizona, Minnesota and North Carolina for example, will be pleased to know that many music therapy services, including but not limited to those for clients with developmental disabilities, are covered. As reimbursement and coverage practices increase, so do the opportunities for dynamic and profitable careers in music therapy.
