Careers 101: Volunteer Opportunities in Texas

Published on 2008-07-31

Schools:

Although the paycheck is usually nonexistent or very small, most people find that volunteer opportunities are rich in the kind of personal edification that is often absent from jobs for pay. Volunteer jobs allow workers productive use of their passions and enthusiasm while also bringing them into contact with people whose experiences exceed the scope of their own.

New graduates and job seekers in particular might enjoy volunteer work for the opportunities it provides to network within their fields and gain valuable experience. Volunteering is also a great addition to any resume.

Unlike most salaried employment, volunteer work does not generally have stringent educational requirements, although germane knowledge is certainly helpful. There are a number of fine schools that can prepare one for volunteer opportunities in Texas. Throughout the state there are approximately 181 colleges and universities that comprise Texas's five university systems, the launching point for many Texas jobs.

The largest public schools are Texas A&M University, University of Houston, University of Texas at Austin, and the University of North Texas. Well-known private institutions include Rice University and Baylor University. High school students who rank in the top ten percent of their class are rewarded with automatic admission into all state-funded universities under a Texas law passed in 1997.

Employers:

Because there are so many openings for volunteers, including nonprofit jobs and internships, duties vary according to the cause and agency. Volunteers' responsibilities are as vast and varied as Texas itself; they may answer phones, coordinate events, write grant applications, fundraise, visit shelters, supervise, deliver products, give tours, take tickets, monitor activity at state parks, read to children, tutor, teach, and/or help with abused animals. Almost every conceivable task can be performed by a volunteer.

To find a volunteer opportunity, contact the human resources manager of the organization you wish to work for. Most agencies, especially nonprofits, are understaffed and welcome dedicated volunteers. If you're not sure what kind of volunteer work you want to do, try visiting an organization such as the Volunteer Center of North Texas, Hands on North Texas, or the nearest university office that places volunteers to determine where you would be best suited to work.
