Schools:
The non-profit sector is a diverse and rapidly growing part of the U.S. economy, representing over 10% of the total American workforce. Charities, NGOs and think tanks participate in everything from feeding the homeless to improving neighborhoods to making public policy recommendations. As such a varied range of activities would suggest, there are many educational paths that would qualify one for non profit jobs in Pennsylvania and its major metro areas, including an associate's or bachelor's degree in the arts or sciences. Some students who are interested in a career in the non profit industry go on to earn a master's degree or Ph.D. in a science, policy or management-related subject. The University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs founded a Nonprofit Clinic in 2001 that helps to provide students with real-life nonprofit experience while earning a master's degree.
Employers:
There are hundreds of charities and cultural, religious, political and scientific organizations at which one could find non profit jobs in Pittsburgh. Three of the largest nonprofit organizations in the city are the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, and The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.
