Schools:
To become a New York veterinarian, a student must complete a four-year degree program at an accredited institution. What comes as a surprise to some aspiring vets is that there are few such schools across the country. Competition for students to get into veterinary schools can thus be much greater than for graduates to obtain New York veterinary jobs. The Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine is a leading NY veterinary school. The State University of New York (SUNY) system also includes several American Veterinary Medical Association-accredited schools.
Employers:
Animal hospitals and private urban medical clinics are the primary sources of New York vet jobs due to the growing population of companion animals. Demand is high for rural, food-animal specialists, but the relatively lower pay tends to make these positions less appealing, despite government-sponsored incentive programs. Increased concern about the transference of animal-borne illnesses to the human population should create new career opportunities in research and veterinary medicine.
