Published on 2008-06-02

Schools:

Healthcare is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in both Texas and the U.S. as a whole. Texas healthcare jobs are staffed by people from all types of educational backgrounds, from high school graduates to professionals with master's degrees and Ph.D.s. Many of the new jobs being created in the healthcare industry are in the home care and medical assistant sectors, which typically require completion of a two-year certification program. Health professionals like doctors, surgeons and nurses require years of advanced schooling, but many occupations in the medical industry require only an associate's or bachelor's degree. These include radiology technicians, medical transcriptionists, healthcare administrators, physical therapists, dental assistants, etc. Schools for aspiring medical professionals in the Houston area include Baylor College of Medicine and Rice University.

Employers:

Houston is a world capital of medical care and scientific research. Texas Medical Center in Houston is the largest medical district in the world, and The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center is a leading U.S. hospital for cancer care. Around 75,000 Houston medical jobs are created by the Texas Medical Center alone. Institutions based there include the aforementioned M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
