Careers 101: Georgia Banking Jobs

Published on 2008-05-19

Schools:

With the exception of bank tellers, most occupations in the banking industry require at least a bachelor's degree in a business or finance-related major such as business administration, accounting, economics or finance. The banking industry is divided into several distinct sectors, including retail banking, commercial banking, investment banking, and the U.S. Federal Reserve System. Retail and commercial banks provide the types of services that the average person most often associates with banks: checking and savings accounts, mortgages and personal loans, debit and credit cards, etc. Specialization within this banking sector would typically require ongoing training. For example, a bachelor's degree and completion of the Certified Mortgage Banker program would make one a strong candidate for Atlanta mortgage jobs. Investment banking is a much more competitive field; an MBA from an excellent and well-recognized program is the recommended educational path. Georgia schools that would provide a good educational background for banking jobs include the Terry College of Business at the University of Georgia (MBA), Georgia Institute of Technology (economics), Georgia State University (business), and Kennesaw State University (business).

Employers:

SunTrust Banks, Inc.; United Community Banks, Inc.; Synovus Financial Corporation; the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta; and Invesco are some of the leading providers of Georgia banking jobs and finance jobs.
