Careers 101: Georgia Aviation Jobs

Published on 2008-07-09

Schools:

The aviation industry is notorious for being one of the most volatile of all employment sectors. Recent fleet reductions and oil price-related layoffs by United, American and several regional carriers have only added to the perceived instability of aviation careers. However, there are many professions within the aviation industry that are likely to show significant employment demand in the coming years. These include air traffic controller, aviation medical examiner and engineering jobs. Employment forecasts from the U.S. Bureau of Labor list reservation ticket agent/travel clerk, airline pilot/flight engineer, and flight attendant jobs as the fastest-growing occupations in air transportation. Middle Georgia College is one of the premier schools providing training for Georgia aviation jobs. Last December, the FAA ranked MGC's air traffic management degree program first among all newly approved Collegiate Training Initiative (CTI) schools. MGC also offers four-year degree programs in aviation management, professional flight management and other aviation-related subjects.

Employers:

Atlanta aviation jobs offer a greater degree of stability than is typical of the industry due to the city's importance as both the headquarters of Delta Air Lines and a hub for shipping and international travel and commerce. Over 55,000 airport jobs are provided by Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which is the world's busiest airport measured by both passengers and number of flights. Many air-based shipping jobs are provided by UPS, which is based in Sandy Springs, an Atlanta suburb.
