Careers 101: Florida Nursing Jobs

Published on 2008-04-21

Schools:

An aspiring nurse in Florida has access to many different types of degree programs, including online or distance learning schools and nursing schools at universities and technical, career and community colleges. Which types of Florida nursing jobs you can pursue depends on the type of certification you obtain. Some programs, such as the Mercy Hospital School of Practical Nursing in Miami, offer LPN/LVN training (Licensed Practical/Licensed Vocational Nurses). LPNs and LVNs work under the supervision of physicians and registered nurses. To become an RN, a bachelor's or associate degree in nursing is the standard educational path. Due to its nursing shortage, Florida offers tax incentives and scholarships to residents who attend nursing school.

Employers:

Nursing graduates who are interested in something other than traditional nursing jobs in hospitals and medical clinics will find many career opportunities in Florida. The large number of retirees in FL creates significant opportunities in home health care and assisted living centers. Florida travel nurse jobs are also easy to find, particularly for winter assignments, a time when the state's population surges with so-called "snowbirds."
