Careers 101: Cincinnati Teaching Jobs

Published on 2008-05-14

Schools:

Aspiring teachers in Cincinnati can enter the profession through many different educational paths, but the traditional course is to obtain a four-year degree in education and complete the Ohio teacher licensing process. Ohio teaching jobs at the postsecondary level usually also require a master's degree or Ph.D. A bachelor's degree is a fundamental requirement for Ohio teachers, though private school educators, unlike their public school counterparts, do not require further certification. Major universities in Cincinnati that offer bachelor's degree programs in education include Xavier University, University of Cincinnati, and College of Mount St. Joseph.

Employers:

Cincinnati is one of the best cities in the U.S. in which to become a teacher. The city's cost of living is below the national average, yet Ohio is ranked among the top 15 states for average teacher salary. A unique aspect of Cincinnati teaching jobs is that the Cincinnati Public Schools' Teacher Evaluation System (TES) has received national recognition for its effectiveness and innovation, including a commendation in January of this year by the nonprofit organization Education Sector, which named the TES as one of "the few comprehensive evaluation systems that seek to measure instruction and improve teaching."
