The majority of jobs in the retail and wholesale sector require no more than a high school degree, relevant customer service experience, and on-the-job training. Many Cincinnati retail jobs are also seasonal or part-time in nature, and thus tend to attract teen and student workers who leave their positions within a matter of weeks or months. However, the retail sector is vast, and can offer rewarding opportunities in management and many other administrative occupations. A degree in retail management, business administration or a similar subject is a useful foundation for retail careers, though many employees advance solely through experience and reliable performance. In addition to schools like Xavier University and The University of Cincinnati, the Cincinnati area contains a number of technical and community colleges with retail-related degree programs. Cincinnati State Technical and Community College offers degrees in Business Management Technology and Marketing Management Technology, among other subjects.

The Kroger supermarket chain and Macy's department store chain are headquartered in Cincinnati, and both are important sources of Cincinnati and Ohio retail jobs. Retail is an approximately $3 billion industry in the Cincinnati metro area. Major malls in the Cincinnati-Dayton Metroplex include Kenwood Towne Centre, Cincinnati Mills and The Mall at Fairfield Commons.
