Schools:
Sports is an extremely diverse industry. It contains not only different types of games, but also a wide range of potential career fields, from advertising and marketing to broadcasting to healthcare to fashion and much more. California universities have diversified their academic programs in recent years to include undergraduate and postgraduate majors such as sports marketing and sports management. The California State University-Long Beach Graduate Program in Sport Management is one example. However, many sports industry professionals obtain a degree in a broader major before pursuing specialized experience and/or training, e.g. journalism vs. sports journalism. A bachelor's degree is not always a requirement for sports-related jobs. For example, an associate's degree or completion of a certified training program is sufficient qualification for some fitness jobs in California. Conversely, most athletic trainers possess a postgraduate degree.
Employers:
The expansion of school athletic programs and the continued attention given to the role of exercise in personal health should ensure the creation of many new California sports jobs in coaching, athletic training, and personal and corporate fitness in the years ahead.
